Staying Safe During A Robbery
Working the register in a retail environment is not anyone’s idea of a good time. It’s very hectic, you often have to deal with people who are not always pleasant, and you can work nights, weekends, and holidays. However, there isn’t usually a lot of danger in the retail game. In most stores all over the world, working retail presents little physical danger to you. But there are the rare occasion when that isn’t the case, and being in retail can be downright frightening. That moment occurs when you are robbed. It isn’t something you see a lot, but when it does happen it’s best to be prepared and aware of what you have to do in order to make it through it in one piece. Here are some tips to keep you safe.
Prepare Ahead of Time
Depending on what kind of business it is, being prepared, and expecting the worst can be the best card to play. Especially small business owners, who depend on the success of their business and pay out of pocket for their inventory, need to take dedicated measures to keeping their store and their employees safe. Business owners should consider a ADT security system, this will not only be helpful if the store is robbed, but if fire or flood damage is possible, the owner will be alerted.
Don’t Be A Hero
You have seen a million movies where someone overpowers or outsmarts a robber. They become the hero and everyone’s favorite, but the truth is that there is never a good reason to try and be the hero. When someone comes in to rob you, you have to be smart and don’t think for a second about saving the day. It’s about saving yourself and the people around you so don’t try and be a hero. There is far more honor in being smart.
Avoid Eye Contact
Someone who comes in to rob you is in the middle of an adrenaline rush. They are scared and they could be on drugs. If they are dealing with you just don’t say a word and don’t make eye contact. Looking at them may spook them more. You want them to be in and be out without getting you, or anyone around you hurt. So just keep your eyes down and keep in full cooperation. The idea is to keep everyone safe so everything you should do should be to that end.
