These are some of the computers in the classroom.

There have been a great deal of advancements within the world of education in terms of the tools and information at the disposal of both teachers and students. Unfortunately, this fact is overshadowed by the cut backs that are being made to a lot of local and city governments within the educational system.

However, regardless of that fact, there are droves of unique and innovative tools that teachers can use to convey information to students, as well as ways for students to perform research and find information they need for a particular assignment. Below are a few of these advancements and tools that are available to students and teachers.

The Internet

The Internet is probably one of the most prevalent of these tools; providing benefits to both teachers as well as students. Teachers have more tools at their disposal via the Internet to find information pertaining to specific curriculums and projects they might want to try, as well as easy methods of checking for plagiarism. Students on the other hand can obtain mounds of information simply by searching for a specific term through a search engine, making project research simple and effective.

Innovative Electronic Devices

Teachers have a wide array of different devices at their disposal that allow them to convey lessons to their students in more engaging ways. From crystal clear projections and televisions, to unique games and interactive projects, there are a number of different routes to take that ensure the student learns while simultaneously staying interested within the material, thus improving the overall educational experience.

Let’s say you’re on a hike. Maybe you’re on a camping trip. You’re having a great time exploring and enjoying nature. You’re having such a good time, in fact, that you’re now lost. Is this your worst nightmare? It shouldn’t be. Here are some simple tips and precautions you can use if you find yourself lost in the woods.

Do not panic.
This one may seem obvious. It’s the go-to answer for every emergency situation. However, now is not the time to indulge in your inner “what if” instinct. What if we never get out? What if we have to spend the night out here? What if there are bears? Don’t indulge in these worries. They’re ridiculous. If you keep your head about you, you’ll be back on track in no time. Take a deep breath. You’re okay, and you will be okay.

Be constantly vigilant while on the trail.
Don’t get so caught up in your walk that you lose where you’re going. Know where the sun is. Take in any and all landmarks. If there’s water around, note where it is. Not only will you be enjoying your surroundings, you’ll be noticing things that will help you find your way back if you do get lost.

If you find yourself lost, examine your surroundings.
Where is the sun? Can you hear rushing water? In what directions? Do you see any power lines? If it’s at night, you can use the North Star to guide you by drawing an imaginary line from it to Earth. That line is the direction of the North Pole. Did you take any pictures along the way? Look at your camera for clues and landmarks about your hike in.

There are numerous benefits to a woman taking self-defense classes, but the reasons why aren’t always as clear as you may think. Yes, every woman should take self-defense lessons so she’s prepared for a dangerous or threatening situation. However, defense classes are just as important for a woman’s own confidence levels and peace of mind.

Self-Defense Increases Confidence

If you’ve taken self-defense, you will be more prepared for a dangerous situation. You’ll be much more mentally stable because you have a plan. Even if you don’t need to act on that plan, you’ll be a lot more level-headed knowing that you have one. Additionally, self-defense will give you greater confidence. This doesn’t mean you should be careless: do not go down a dark alley at night in a bad part of town, for example. That’s incredibly stupid. Self-defense knowledge will give you more of a confidence when you’re alone. If you look nervous or weaker, you become more of a target. Additionally, self-defense will give you the confidence to live your life and not be crippled by fear.

Self-Defense Lets You Own Your Fears

Almost every woman has that one fear she can’t shake. Maybe it’s the thought that someone’s in her backseat while she drives. Maybe it’s being approached from behind. Maybe it’s someone being under the car or in the house when she doesn’t know it. Maybe she fears the long walk from her office to her car in the parking garage. Whatever that fear is, having a plan will help ease that fear. Some women have pepper spray on hand, others feel better when they carry a set of keys. Self-defense classes can teach you the best course of action when someone does approach you from behind. These lessons can show you effective ways to distract or injure an attacker. They’ll point out the weakest parts on the body; parts that you can use to stun or paralyze.

Hopefully, you’ll never have to use these lessons. However, you’ll walk a little taller knowing that you have your own weapons to use against any potential attackers out there.

Especially with the recent credit crisis, you’re hearing it more and more: live within your means. What are your means and how do you live within them? What does that phrase even mean?

Living within your means translates to “don’t spend what you can’t afford.” You need to carefully consider how much you’re making and how much you’re spending. Are you familiar with the Weight Watchers style of dieting? Weight Watchers emphasizes that you need to write down everything you eat. Everything. Even that handful of M&Ms you took from the candy bowl while passing. Well, getting control of your spending works much the same way. Take a small notebook and write down every single thing you buy. EVERYTHING. You’ll quickly see how fast that morning latte or eating out adds up. You may think to yourself, “but this mega fountain soda only costs two dollars! Two dollars? That’s nothing.” Well, let’s look at that two dollars. Assuming you buy one every work day, that’s forty dollars a month on soda– something that’s not very healthy to begin with. Do this with all your expenses. How much are you spending on dining out? How much on entertainment? How much on groceries?

Let’s talk about groceries. It can be really difficult to look closely at your grocery expenses. Healthwise, you should be spending much of your money on food expenses: that’s fuel for your family. Your family needs that to survive. Don’t cut on grocery costs by buying cheap junk your body doesn’t need or want. Use your grocery trips to combat dining out. Buy ingredients that you’re excited to cook and you’ll save so much money by not paying someone to cook it for you.

Talk with your family about what you really need to be spending and what you should be spending. When you see that extra money in your account, you’ll be thankful.

Everything You Wanted to Know About Leeches

Leeches are best known for being a blood-sucking organism. They resemble worms and can be found in temperate and tropical zones. Unless you’re at an old-fashioned doctor’s office, you probably won’t find leeches in the wild unless you enter water or a waterside environment. Leeches generally live in swamps, marshes, bogs, or tropical vegetation. Water animals may also carry leeches. Leeches love to wiggle in small spaces, so keep your pants tucked into your shoes or boots. Insect repellant is also helpful. Leech bites do not hurt because their saliva acts like an anesthetic when they bite into your skin.

What to Do About Them

Well, if you’ve got a strong stomach, you can wait until the leech has had its fill of your blood– it will then drop off by itself. If not, look for the small end of the leech. That’s where the mouth is. Take your finger and slide it towards the wound. You can use your fingernail to push the mouth sideways. Once you’ve detached the mouth, you have to quickly detach the rear end of the leech. Try flicking it with your finger. The leech will be trying to reattach itself while you do this. Clean the wound and expect it to be itchy while the wound heals.

Here’s What You Shouldn’t Do

Do not pull the leech. Don’t salt it or use chemicals. Don’t burn it. Basically, you need to remove the leech firmly and gently. Do NOT resort to any of these harsh methods because the leech may regurgitate into the wound. This will make the wound much worse and will cause an infection much worse than the original leech bite.

If you’re going to survive in the wilderness, you’re going to need to learn how to clean and cook the food you find in the wild. You also need to identify what not to eat. Educate yourself now to prepare yourself in case of emergency.

Eating Fish

If you’re lucky enough to catch or find a fish, cook it as soon as possible. Fish quickly spoils (especially on warmer days). Cut out the gills first and remove the bloodline. This is the large blood vessels found near the spine of the fish. If the fish is longer than ten centimeters, you should gut it. Scale the fish.

Do not eat a fish that shows any of the following signs: bad odor, slimy body, sharp or peppery taste, easily dented flesh when you apply pressure with your finger, sunken eyes, or gills that aren’t pink or red. You may also notice a metallic taste when you eat it.

How to Cook Fish in the Wild

One easy way is to impale the fish on a stick and roast it over the open fire. This may be the tastiest option. However, you’ll find much better nutrition by boiling the fish. All the fish’s fats are located under the skin. You can save the juice for broth later for additional nutrition. Other methods include packing the fish in clay and burying it under coals. When the clay becomes hard, you can break it open and enjoy your fish. You’ll know your fish is done when the flesh is flaky. If you have extra fish that you want to save, smoke or fry the fish.

How to Cook Birds

Kill the bird first. Then you need to pluck it. You can skin it if you want, but this removes flavor and nutritional value. Open up the bird and remove the entrails. Save the heart and liver for protein. Boil the bird so you’ll have broth later or spit-roast it. If it’s a scavenger bird, you will need to boil it for twenty minutes to kill any parasites that may be living on the bird.

Most people know that they should have insurance when they purchase a home. In fact, in many places, it is required to have homeowner’s insurance. When you are renting, though, you will not find this requirement nearly as often. Some property owners may require it, but in general, it is not a law or even a rule. Because of this, many people overlook renter’s insurance. When you are renting, you should consider that there might be disasters. There may come a time that you wish you hadn’t overlooked renter’s insurance.

What Does Renter’s Insurance Cover?

Renter’s insurance covers a variety of situations. For example, if you are considering Orlando apartments for your next home, you may not think about the fact that your apartment complex might have a fire. If you have renter’s insurance, the items that you have in the apartment will be covered, up to the amount of your insurance policy. There is also renter’s liability insurance, which can help you if there is a problem that you would normally be liable for.

What Doesn’t Renter’s Insurance Cover?

Each policy is different in what, exactly, it doesn’t cover. This is something that you should look into carefully before deciding on a renter’s insurance policy. Some examples of what may be excluded are flood, earthquakes or power outages. Choosing your policy is an important step when you are moving into a new area. Understand what natural disasters in the area may occur and make sure that you get a policy that reflects these things.

Though it may not be required by your property owner or the government to have an insurance policy when you are renting, it is always a good idea. No one wants disaster to strike, but it can happen to anyone. Having a way to cover yourself and your assets is important.

The Columbine High School massacre in 1999 that left 12 people dead and 21 injured brought the need to address school safety and security to the forefront. In 2007, the Virginia Tech massacre left 32 people dead and many injured. This most recent incident highlights the importance of maintaining a safe and secure environment for students.

Causes of these incidents have been blamed on a variety of factors. Supporter of anti-gun laws placed the blame squarely on gun ownership. As information became available regarding the shooters background, video games and music were considered the motivators that initiated the shootings.

The social climate of schools have been highlighted as a result of the shootings. The isolation experienced by students who are excluded from group activities can be indicators of potential future issues. Acts of bullying increases the chance of retaliatory incidents.

Schools have reacted to the need for increased safety in a variety of ways. Every educational institution is required to implement a security plan for their building. Follow up to the established plan includes training and exercises as well as updates when deficiencies are identified. Security drills are the most effective when both staff and students participate and honest auditing is performed. Additional security measures that are provided by some schools include surveillance cameras and metal detectors.

Parents play a crucial role in their child’s safety and can make a difference by being armed with knowledge. A parents review and support of the school policies and procedures is critical to success. Consideration of others must be supported by the school and parents in order to eliminate the atmosphere of bullying. Active participation of all parties will allow open communication and increase the chances of prohibiting a future school massacre.

Content

House fires result in many deaths each year. The initial cause of a majority of these fires are related to accidental incidents within the home. Examples of fire initiators include candles, smoking, cooking, and heating accidents. Not every accident is avoidable, but being prepared for one will possibly save your home or life. The fact that a home fire is the most common type of disaster should make avoiding one a high priority for home owners.

Heating fires are possible when an alternative heat source is used in a home. Wood stoves and the different types of space heaters available can cause a fire when they are not properly attended. When using an alternative heating option it is important to consider the position of the heater in relation to items within the home that have the potential to catch fire. These heaters should be continuously monitored and turned off when leaving the home. If a fireplace is used there should be protection from sparks. To maintain chimney safety, it should be inspected and cleaned yearly.

Cooking fires are often caused by leaving the area unattended when preparing a meal. This type of fire can be avoided by keeping the areas around the stove clear of items that can catch fire and remaining attentive to the task at hand. Placing a fire extinguisher in the kitchen area can eliminate the possibility of a spreading fire.

Candles are commonly used throughout the home. The risk of fire is related to the location of the candle and it’s ability to be knocked over or come in contact with a combustible material. Candles should be placed in safe areas and extinguished when the area is left unattended.

A proactive approach to a potential home fire is necessary to ensure family safety. Smoke alarms should be installed throughout the home and the batteries need to be changed at least yearly. It is also necessary to have a family emergency plan.

Easy access to credit cards and payday loans have created a void in understanding the basics of budgeted living. The precise marketing tactics of every saleable item ensures that consumers believe they “deserve” the items desired. Society has become accustomed to instant gratification. The thought of waiting to purchase something once money is saved has become a thing of the past. Buy now and worry about the rest later is the current mantra.

New furniture and carpeting are highlighted advertisements prior to tax time. Buy now with no payments until April. Purchase of appliances are highlighted on the six months, same as cash credit card plans of home improvement stores. Poor credit is not a prohibitive factor in the purchase of a car. If all else fails, there is the rent to own option that allows you to pay inflated prices for disposable items.

When you disentangle yourself from the constraints of living the perceived dream, freedom is found. Budgeted living provides the opportunity to live a reality that does not include a payoff at the end. A planned approach to financial expenses should include payment obligations, utilities, groceries, transport expenses, and savings. Another important part of the budget is a plan for emergencies. A specific amount of the monthly budget should be set aside to be used in the event of an emergency.

Building a budget and living within the parameters set allow an individual to approach life in a realistic manner. This provides the groundwork for decisions about the future. When faced with a desire for more there should be an evaluation regarding how to increase income. Creating more income may mean a loss of personal time, which can be an important factor to some. A budget will allow the person living within its constraints to make the life choices that best suit them.
