Saving Food For Emergencies
Natural disasters such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes and earth quakes can strike any place any time. Under any natural disaster the two most visible problems faced by people are food and shelter. The loss of these two takes more lives than the natural disaster itself. In many cases the shelter like homes stay intact but the supply of food and electricity stop because of damage to roads and electricity lines caused by natural disasters such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes and earth quakes. You need to prepare for these unavoidable circumstances by storing for the bad times. If a minute creature like an ant can do the same, then why can’t intelligent humans do it?
To store food, you need to understand that foods can expire in matter of days and can’t be eaten. Hence whatever you store needs to be nonperishable and long lasting. The presence of too much water in foods causes them to rot soon. Hence go for dried foods like almonds, cashews and even meat can be stored in the form of beef jerky’s and beef sticks. These are sources of strength and protein which will help in any disaster. If you do not prefer dried meats, then you can store canned meat and fish. Tuna stays consumable for more than an ear and it contains good bit of omega 3 fatty acids. If you prefer vegetarian then you can go for canned beans which can be a replacement for meat. You could also go for carrots, and peas instead of beans. Canned fruits too are a great option with fruits such s pineapple, pears, peaches, berries and apple sauce widely available in the market. Store crackers as much as possible and go for whole grain ones. These will be great snacks and if you have children with you, they will help a lot.
