What to Do if You’re Lost in the Woods
Let’s say you’re on a hike. Maybe you’re on a camping trip. You’re having a great time exploring and enjoying nature. You’re having such a good time, in fact, that you’re now lost. Is this your worst nightmare? It shouldn’t be. Here are some simple tips and precautions you can use if you find yourself lost in the woods.
- Do not panic.
This one may seem obvious. It’s the go-to answer for every emergency situation. However, now is not the time to indulge in your inner “what if” instinct. What if we never get out? What if we have to spend the night out here? What if there are bears? Don’t indulge in these worries. They’re ridiculous. If you keep your head about you, you’ll be back on track in no time. Take a deep breath. You’re okay, and you will be okay. - Be constantly vigilant while on the trail.
Don’t get so caught up in your walk that you lose where you’re going. Know where the sun is. Take in any and all landmarks. If there’s water around, note where it is. Not only will you be enjoying your surroundings, you’ll be noticing things that will help you find your way back if you do get lost. - If you find yourself lost, examine your surroundings.
Where is the sun? Can you hear rushing water? In what directions? Do you see any power lines? If it’s at night, you can use the North Star to guide you by drawing an imaginary line from it to Earth. That line is the direction of the North Pole. Did you take any pictures along the way? Look at your camera for clues and landmarks about your hike in.
